Learning Power Approach Leadership

Shape your school culture through metacognition, agency and learner empowerment

A 5-part Masterclass Series with Graham Powell

Join leadership and coaching expert Graham Powell to explore how the Learning Power Approach (LPA) can shape a culture of growth, reflection and independent thinking across your school. This series offers practical and strategic support to strengthen pedagogy, coaching, and school leadership through the principles of LPA.

Learning Power is about growing learners — not just delivering lessons. Leading with this in mind means helping teachers, students and teams shift from compliance to agency. But sustaining that shift takes thoughtful modelling, reflection, and a consistent focus on how learning actually happens.

These sessions provide space to explore those ideas deeply, and apply them in your context — so that every part of your school begins to work more intentionally in service of learner development.

The Masterclass Series

1 Introduction to coaching

Graham introduces a variety of coaching models and theory behind coaching. This introductory unit will give you a strong basis for understanding coaching - what it is and what it isn’t - and why you might like to thread it into your leadership and training palette.

2 Coaching ourselves

As a first step to coaching anyone, we need to learn to coach ourselves. Graham shares a range of tools and techniques to develop self-reflection and coaching skills, providing not only a useful basis to coach students, but also a useful toolkit to improve our relationships and practice.

3 Coaching students

Graham walks us through two worked examples, positioning us as the learner to experience how we can build challenge, empathy, reflection and understanding through coaching questions. He also shares key coaching questions to use as part of our day-to-day coaching practice.

4 Developing a whole school language for learning

Although schools have a shared understanding of what it is they have to teach, there are a plethora of, sometimes overwhelming, lists of how we might want our students to become effective learners in school and beyond. In this workshop you will be helped to decide on a language for learning that best serves your school - and how to implement it and make it stick in day-to-day practice.

5 Communicating your vision

With primary and secondary feeder schools. The disjuncture that exists between the primary and secondary phases can be wasteful of energy and detrimental to progress. Graham demonstrates how he has helped schools work across phases to enable  teachers to  learn effectively from each other and learners to build on previous good habits in new environments.

  • Schools unwilling to invest in sustained, values-led professional learning
